The small Stannary town of Chagford, prettily nestled among the Dartmoor hills, is a great place to visit. At its heart are the two well-known family-run shops of Webbers and Bowdens – a visit to both will take up at least half a day of your time! There are also traditional craft shops and local artists, clothes shops, cafés and pubs, all clustered around a small square with a pretty ‘pepperpot’ building at its centre.
There is an award-winning outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and superb walking in every direction. The River Teign hurries through woods and meadows nearby and on below Castle Drogo (National Trust), an imposing landmark set high on a granite outcrop.
The town of Okehampton and City of Exeter are around half an hour away in opposite directions, or take a stunning drive across the moor to come to the pretty town of Tavistock. The whole expanse of Dartmoor is on the doorstep waiting to be explored.
If you want to travel further afield, Devon’s glorious south and north coasts are about an hour and an hour and a half away, respectively.
