There’s no shortage of things to do on Dartmoor and the surrounding area. For the energetic, there is unlimited walking, hiking and climbing in an area of stunning beauty. There are several good golf courses nearby and all manner of other pursuits such as horse riding, fishing, falconry and cycling. If you prefer a more relaxed approach, touring by car is equally spectacular and the many small moorland towns and villages are generously stocked with cafés, pubs and restaurants.

The next closest town to Down Cottage, again with a good range of shops, pubs and cafés. Moretonhampstead is an ancient market town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Its fascinating history goes back over 1000 years to Saxon times. It has a good range of potters and other artisan crafters.
The county town of Devon and some 16 miles away from Down Cottage. It has all you would expect to find in a cathedral city – excellent shops, great places to eat and drink plus plenty of history and culture.

One of a number of National Trust properties in the area, Castle Drogo can be seen clearly from Down Cottage! Currently ‘under wraps’ as part of a major restoration project, the Lutyens’ designed castle, built during the early part of the 20th century, is well worth a visit.
One of Britain’s top hotels, Gidleigh Park is a short drive from Down Cottage. Renowned for its superb food, under Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines, Gidleigh Park is definitely worth a visit for that really ‘special’ meal out.
Bovey Castle – is big and bold and well worth a visit! It has a championship golf course and a SUNDÃRI spa as well as restaurants and bars.
